1854年，江户幕府在美国军舰的威胁下被迫签下《神奈川条约》，从此日本的锁国政策告终，开放港口与外国通航通商，浮世绘也因此大量流向国外。自此，具有东方风格的浮世绘引起了外国人的注意，受到法国印象派画家的欣赏，于是首先在巴黎画坛掀起了一股“日本潮流”，印象派和后印象派的许多画家们都从浮世绘中获得启示，并且在很大程度上影响了他们的创作。克劳德·莫奈(Claude Monet, 1840-1926)可能是热心寻求和购买日本浮士绘作品焦躁的印象派画家之一。Claude Monet was not only the impressionist painter that we know but also an early collector of Japanese prints. The Japanese prints, called Ukiyo-E (“paintings of the Floating World”) were discovered by painters who were later known as the French Impressionists.
